Dr. Paul and Gail Lock Memorial Scholarship Fund – Honoree Profile
The Dr. Paul and Gail Lock Memorial Scholarship was originally established by Dr. Lock and family to honor his best friend and wife of 52 years, Gail (Agnew) Lock, who passed away in August of 2022. Following Dr. Lock’s passing in July of 2024, the Scholarship was revised to jointly honor Paul and Gail and the enduring legacies they left behind.
Both Paul and Gail were raised in Spencer, MA. Paul graduated from David Prouty High School in Spencer in 1964 and was presented with the School’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2018. Gail graduated from David Prouty High School in 1965.
Following high school, Paul graduated from Assumption College in 1968 and St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1972. He completed training in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, MA, followed by a Fellowship in Endocrinology at the University of Colorado in 1975. Dr. Lock returned to Worcester to become an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Diabetes at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. In addition to teaching medical students, he treated patients for almost 50 years, which he fondly characterized as the favorite part of his career. He authored more than 60 medical publications and participated in over 75 clinical research studies related to diabetes.
Gail earned her bachelor's degree from Worcester State University in 1969 before embarking on a long and impactful career in education. Following a break from teaching to focus on raising her family, Gail served as a 1st and 2nd grade teacher for over 25 years at the Paxton Center School, where she touched the lives of countless children, before retiring in 2007. Following her retirement, Gail dedicated significant time sewing dresses for impoverished children as part of The Haiti Project. She was an active member of The Paxton Women’s Club. Above and beyond all her professional and charitable activities, Gail’s true passion remained being a devoted and loving “Nana” to all her grandchildren.
Paul and Gail travelled the world together and cherished time with family and friends on Martha’s Vineyard. From beginning to end, Paul and Gail lived remarkable lives full of kindness, generosity and purpose.
