For Students
Sumner B. Tilton Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1985 to honor Sumner B. Tilton, a prominent attorney and philanthropist in Central Massachusetts who passed away in 1981. It is awarded to graduating seniors from Worcester and surrounding towns with superior academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.
Recipients must attend a college or university known for its academic excellence. This scholarship is renewable for subsequent years of college if the student maintains a 3.0 minimum grade point average. It is also potentially renewable for law school, though not for other graduate programs.
According to his son, Sumner B. Tilton, Jr. (“Tony”), Sumner had a lifelong belief in the value of higher education and “would have been thrilled” to help local youth attain college degrees and fulfill their promise. His friends and colleagues were inspired by his leadership and civic participation, and by his story of rising to professional success from a modest background. They found it fitting to recognize him by helping new generations of young people reach their own full potential.
